The need to rebuild identity integrity and democratic accountability - When IT Meets Politics
A blog about UK politics and the information society

"I have just read the report of the Association of Electoral Administrators on the future of electoral administration in the UK. We may be about to have a long overdue referendum on the choice between "first past the post" and casting our votes in order of preference (the alternative vote). But it is far more important to cleanse the UK election system, from the initial register to the processes for exposing and prosecuting malpractice and fraud (as in the stealing of local government elections). Federal government overturns Manitoba First Nation's election

Federal government overturns Manitoba First Nation's election

The federal government has overturned election results for Lake St. Martin First Nation, north of Winnipeg, for the second time in five years.

The election was held Sept. 10, 2009, and, after an appeal and independent investigation, the federal cabinet ordered the election's results overturned June 3, citing violations of Indian band election regulations.

"The chief and the six councillors were advised on June 7," said Indian and Northern Affairs Canada spokeswoman Margot Geduld. "This is after careful examination and an independent investigation. This decision isn't taken lightly."

Geduld said the violations included failing to maintain control of the ballot process, opening mail-in ballots and depositing them into the ballot box, failing to maintain adequate records of mail-in ballots and allowing individual electors to vote more than once. --->>>

Instant Runoff Voting Is Under Review - WSJ.com

Instant Runoff Voting Is Under Review - WSJ.com:

The Charter Revision Commission, the panel appointed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg to consider changes to the city constitution, plans to take a serious look at a proposal that would eliminate the need for voters to make a second trip to the polls for runoff elections.

The proposal, known as instant runoff voting, would allow voters to rank candidates in order of preference. If a candidate fails to reach 40%, the threshold in New York City for winning a party's nomination in citywide races, the ballots would be counted again, with voters' rankings used to simulate a runoff.

Supporters say the proposal would increase voter participation and save taxpayers millions of dollars. --->>>
