The upcoming provincial election this fall will feature a number of firsts, but the option of voting electronically won't be one them.

Elections New Brunswick held its first training session for returning officers and clerks yesterday, the first in a series to help everything run smoothly on Sept. 27. It was the first of several during the coming months to make sure the 55 returning officers and 61 clerks from around the province will be prepared for the vote.

Michael Quinn, the chief electoral officer, says having the first scheduled election in New Brunswick makes everything more predictable, so they're not left at the whim of the government to organize staff, locations and other logistics on a month's notice.

Although having a fixed date will be a big change, Quinn says offering advanced options like electronic voting -- either online or with electronic voting machines -- won't be offered this time around.

"Electronic voting is still in its trial stages," he says.

"It's being looked at all across Canada, but it's not an immediate thing at all. I don't think that you'll see that in many Canadian jurisdictions for some years." ...
