Public Interest Alberta seeks new laws to correct election irregularities: Calgary Herald

Public Interest Alberta seeks new laws to correct election irregularities:

EDMONTON — Public Interest Alberta and Liberal MLA Kevin Taft are going to court to try to address what they say were widespread irregularities in the 2008 provincial election.

They are seeking a judicial declaration to push the government to pass new election laws that would eliminate many of the problems that plagued voting day.

“This democratic deficit is deep and persistent and they don’t want to do anything about it,” said Larry Booi, with Public Interest Alberta, a left-leaning but non-partisan advocacy group. “There’s not a shred of political will, so we’re hoping there will be some judicial will.”

The list of complaints includes: Tory-appointed returning officers, a lack of mobile polling stations on campuses and reserves, people directed to the wrong polling stations and long wait times.

Taft said the move is not about replaying the last election, but rather about protecting Albertans’ right to vote.
