Gordon Brown has given his strongest backing to election reform which would ensure that MPs received the backing of at least half of local voters.

Labour is committed to holding a referendum on voting reform if the party wins the next election, although campaigners had hoped that a law triggering a plebiscite would be passed before polling day.
During Prime Minister’s Question Time, Mr Brown dropped a strong hint that if a referendum was held, he would campaign in favour of the alternative vote (AV) system, where electors are able to rank candidates in order of preference.
